Melanina es el nombre de una niña, centro de un vórtice zoológico que la acecha, amenazando ahogarla en su diversidad metamórfica. Hay algo de primal en la escena, una atmósfera cosmogónica que trae a la memoria imágenes del paraíso terrenal de la tradición flamenca, o las acumulaciones vertiginosas y proto-enciclopédicas de animales en representaciones del Arca de Noé.
Esta iteración del tema se diferencia en su cariz científico, este relato parece referirse al origen del color en la fauna del mundo, en efecto, todos los animales son albinos, y la melanina del título resulta contenida toda en la niña protagonista. Ella parece encontrarse en un primer momento de deleite frente a la atención de los animales, una mezcla de escamas, pelos y cuernos pálidos donde todos los matices del blanco desfilan perlados. Queda cierta turbación frente a la continuidad del benevolente equilibrio.
